Anderson (Halsey, OR USA) This product works well for what I wanted -- a replacement portable DVD player for my toddler because the amplifier in the GPX player I purchased on clearance at Sears went out. I wanted a player that wasn't going to be so inexpensively built as to be cheap, but I didn't need the super-delux-ultra-everything model. I don't have a lot of money to be throwing around, especially on fancy electronic gadgets for a child. This player has most of the controls on the player, which is nice. The other player (that broke) required that you used the remote for anything other than playing or adjusting volume. It was so small that I was terrified of losing it and not being able to navigate the menus on some of the DVDs. I don't like the sound quality as much on this unit, but my son isn't complaining so it works fine. I also like the 9-inch screen better than the 7-inch screen we had before. Sometimes this unit doesn't want to play a DVD with a complex menu right away, but we just try again or pick a different movie.

There was a little wabble where the screen attaches to the actual player that didn't feel sturdy. I'd recommend this for older kids for sure though. We took it on a road trip a few days after Christmas. my 10yr. old dropped it from her lap to the floor of the van and it no longer worked. I know it was our fault for dropping it, but we have 8 kids, so we have a couple of other portables that have been dropped a few times and still work great.

"from an ipod addict............."2010-03-26 By A. Niles (USA) before i bought my archos 5 160gig with android, i did much research and reading. ive had it for 2 days now. it is all it should be! i love it. will i love it tomorrow. i think so. however ive read so much about it crashing that i wonder if it will last.
im not a gadget guru or a tech-head. just someone that was addicted to apple ipods. had many of em. they have problems as well people. lets not pretend they dont. but for all its quirks (and there's not many), the archos is really cool.
now 6 months or 3 years from now when my lil archos device stops working and i cant get any archos tech support of any kind at all... will i still love it? YES!!!!!! why? heres why?
its like no other device out there. it destroys the iphone! (my brother has 2 iphones and loved em till he saw the archos) u wont believe the stuff this thing can do!
but enough preening over it. heres some stuff u should know.
1. closing the browser doesnt stop the browser program entirely. ull need to go to the system functions for that. its made like that, i assume, for the purpose of faster loading. BUT... leaving open all theses different apps all at once MAY be the reason for all the crashing. i say may because, again, im no tech-head.
2. the booklet and the internet info all say to "CHARGE COMPLETELY BEFORE USING" and u better do it! charging straight from the usb cord on ur computer will take much longer than a wall outlet adapter though. MUCH longer. in fact the booklet says that when its done charging the little light will blink. but in my case, 24 hours later and the little light was still solid. when i picked it up i accidently hit the power button. the archos powered up and to my suprise, the little light started to flash. now i unhooked and ran it down dead and im still waiting for it to charge back up. (no wall adapter yet lol!) but i gotta say for its first charge... it ran from 2-3 in the afternoon till around 2-3 that night. (i only had it play music all night) meaning the 12 hour battery life they boast is fairly accurate.
BUT YOU MUST CHARGE THE HECK OUT OF IT BEFORE U USE IT THE FIRST TIME. my advice: 24 hour initial charge. do not interrupt
and i know its hard to do that when u just got it and u really wanna play with it. however, for the money ur spending, u better do it right and get the most out of ur dollars ya know.
ive not yet tried the transmitter in my car, nor have i tried the GPS. but i did very easily look thru (and listen to) my brothers music folder on his computer via the wi-fi. a lil sluggish but he has over 400 gigs of music so u could see why.
plug n play: best thing ever!!!!!!!
and as far as people saying that the touch screen is NOT sensitive to finger-touch but sensitive to EVERYTHING else.... wrong! (at least in my opinion) and come on people, its an electronic device, u cant throw it on the table like car keys.
if ur wondering wether or not u should turn from ipod to archos... i think so. just be sure to update the firmware and i think the archos will impress u greatly

"Coming from using an iPod"2010-03-21 By Chris (Ohio) I looked all around on deals and reviews before purchasing my Archos 5. I'm an Android phone user so that was a big selling point here. I came from a 160GB iPod and have some pro's and con's. The touch screen is nice, just make sure you calibrate it with a fine point and not your finger tip, this made WORLDS of difference in usability! The integrated WiFi is nice, I got the hack to add Android Market but it currently only supports the free apps, but it's better than the Archos market. Google Maps with GPS doesn't work unless you have WiFi connection basically, so don't think you can get around paying for the GPS software just yet.
I have to say the unit is a bit bulky, but how else can you fit all the specs into a 5inch option. Battery life seems to be below that of an iPod, then again I use the bluetooth sometimes and play more Apps. Video playback is good, I like the controls and the large screen! Archos uses a different media player than the default one in android and that means placing music into a different folder than you would if you had an Android phone. The kickstand is nice but can be a challenge to get out sometimes without it slipping under your fingernail and causing pain, but you get better at it. FM radio is nice but I don't think it works with Bluetooth headphones since it asks for headphones to be inserted. I think it uses the headphone cables as a small antenna but the reception seems good when in use.
You may notice the builtin FM transmitter option in the device settings, this isn't enabled unless you use the Archos branded car adapter. I noticed if you just have the cable plugged into the device but not in your car you can use this, so I'm iffy on whether or not the cable really does anything special? That seems to work alright once you find a good station to use. I think I'll be getting a different car receiver to do audio over Bluetooth or 3.5mm headphone jack since FM carries poor sound quality.

Of course!!!!...Now she realizes that ANY product with built in batteries are 1 to two year "disposables"..WHY put all of your bought songs,videos,and memories AND info on a 300 plus dollar disposable product...Ipods have lead the way with the BUILT IN BATTERY..PEOPLE please learn..The battery recharge life will be over long before the electrinic components in these devices..Companies make more cash this way..I wish consumers would just stand up and take control of their products..Let us change our own batteries WHEN it wears out a year or two down the road..Allow people to keep their memories not lose them "WHEN" a BUILT IN battery stops its charge...WAKE UP CONSUMERS.... It's really like paying hundreds of dollars for a disposable camera you buy at your local store to take quick pics and DISPOSE of...(Would You Do That??)That's REALLY how Ipod and these types of devices have conditioned us robot consumers.. Those who have seen my review for the Zune HD 16 GB Video MP3 Player (Black) and Creative Zen X-Fi 16 GB Video MP3 Player with Wireless LAN and Built-In Speaker (Black/Silver) know I'm not new to media devices. I've been around them for many years, all the way back to the failed MiniDisc format and even back to cassette decks, single and dual reel. I just can't seem to find that perfect device no matter what I do - they're all missing one or more critical features that render them essentially worthless. Zune HD came the closest, but not for the glaring issues I mentioned in that review.
For me, I don't need a movie player - my laptop does that fine. I also don't need something to hold my entire library - I usually want to listen to a single genre at a time. But the catch with me is that it needs to be simple and efficient. I don't want to futz with all sorts of crazy settings in order to get it to work. Above that, it needs to be an all-around device that I can literally use anywhere without spending inordinate amounts of cash.
I decided to take a plunge on the Archos 5 as it was on sale. I know it's basically an all-around device with tons of features I don't need, but it also had the things that a lot of media players lack these days:
- support for hidden WiFi hotspots (Zune HD flaw) - near universal codec support (Zune HD and iPod flaw) - touchscreen (Zen X-Fi flaw) - standard connectors (Zune HD and iPod flaw) - Mass storage support for drag-and-drop (Zune HD and iPod flaw) - Ready to use out-of-the-box (Zune HD and iPod flaw) - Shuffle play (Zen X-Fi flaw) - Bluetooth (Zune HD and Zen X-Fi flaw)
Those are the pros. And it is an impressive list. Unfortunately, the entire experience is marred by what I can only assume are glaring bugs with the Android OS on this device. I'm not sure if it's the older firmware or if it's Android specifically, but there are major issues with this device that render it nigh unusable.
- WiFi is essentially broken. I turned it on and set up my hotspot, and it did find the hotspot, but then it turned itself off. I tried to turn it back on and it came on for a split second, then turned itself off again. Then when I finally got it to stop turning off, it refused to connect to my hotspot claiming it was "out of range". Considering I'm 25 feet away from the router and I've got four devices around me all connected without a problem, obviously there are some glitches with the Archos. It never happened after I upgraded the firmware, but still...this is appalling to have it be released with this kind of issue.
- The touchscreen is analogous to the older style touchscreens, not the iPod Touch type touchscreen. The Zune HD also uses the older style, but it is a lot more responsive than the Archos. The way they implemented it, most options require a double click to confirm input, but certain menu options do not. This resulted in many inadvertent clicks on menu options I didn't want, just so I could scroll up and down. Sometimes it doesn't respond, sometimes it locks up completely. Not good.
- You can't do anything when it's connected via USB. This one is a tad bit unfair, but I want to note it as my BlackBerry Storm works just fine when connected via USB. I can't access the SD card, but I can still at least get to other options. The Archos throws a message that it can't access media functions even if you're just trying to navigate the File Explorer.
- I mentioned it supports mass storage. This is true...but it still requires Windows Player 11. Why's that a problem? Well, if you're a Mac user, the Archos will not be recognized. In fact, Snow Leopard never did throw a message that it couldn't read the Archos; it just ignored it even though the Archos claimed it was mounted. Now, I don't use iTunes, so that might have affected the experience. But I still expected the Archos hard drive to show up on the Snow Leopard desktop without additional changes, and it did not. In any case, mass storage should not require any application, hence the term "mass" storage.
- Shuffle play does work and works fine - which is a big feature for me given I use it in my car and don't want to futz with picking songs - but the problem is the control scheme of the Archos. Because it doesn't have any physical buttons, and because there isn't really a media "player" to use (more on this later), you have to select the first song/folder you want to play and then it will shuffle. Call it nitpicky, but I want to just go to a genre, "right click" and select "Shuffle Play" or "Play Folder" or "Play Random". I don't want to select a song, that's 6 extra clicks which isn't practical when on the move.
- The apps on the Archos leave a lot to be desired. I didn't go too deep into these as my main goal was music, but there is an actual "Music" app that didn't do anything. It wouldn't read the music I had stored on the Archos even though the primary music option did. The instructions didn't help either (more on that later). That Music app was where the flexibility was supposed to come into play, but how can I leverage it if it won't even read the music I've got stored?
- The instruction booklet in the box is pathetic. So much so that it actually refers you to a PDF stored on the Archos itself (or on the website) that goes into more detail. If you're going to have a user manual, include the WHOLE user manual. Don't pull a Final Fantasy XI (long story).
- SD Card corruption. I had a brand new card inserted, the Archos threw all sorts of red flags. Mind you, the card worked just fine in my Macbook prior to me inserting it into the Archos. Something the Archos did corrupted it, and it wouldn't let me format the card. I had to plug it back into my MacBook to format it before the Archos would receive it, and even then, it corrupted again when I was sync'ing files to it. After that, I plugged it back into the MacBook, and it crashed Snow Leopard. The Archos WILL corrupt your data, folks.
- Random shutdowns and reboots. The device would just shut itself off randomly, even when it was still connected and being charged. It happened at least 7 times. Didn't happen after I upgraded the firmware, but I note it here for anyone else foolish enough to buy this device.
- And then, the Bluetooth. I didn't think anyone could screw up a Bluetooth implementation, but Archos sure did. See, I have a BlackBerry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway in my car, as my car has Bluetooth phone but not Bluetooth A2DP. Now, that device works extremely well with my Storm and my computer, and it did work initially with the Archos. The problem is that the Archos does not re-connect automatically; you're forced to manually re-connect it each time you want to use it. This is a pain - even the order of connection matters. The Archos has to be set up to connect to the A2DP device before the A2DP device responds. It's hard to explain, but suffice it to say, it was a struggle getting it to connect, and when it did, it wouldn't connect again. This one is a deal breaker, and I know it's not the Gateway, as every other Bluetooth device connects with no issue.
In short, is it recommended? No. It's simple as that. There's a reason that Archos released Archos 7 with a full OS that wasn't Android. There's a reason that Amazon dropped the prices of these to rock bottom. The device is a novel concept, and a worthy effort. But it's just not up to par. Even at lower prices it's not worth the headache of futzing with it.
Now you might be saying to yourself, "but what about movies?? What about games?? What about apps?? What about browsing??" To which I would challenge you to think: If this can't even play music properly, what does that tell you about more advanced functionality? Think about it. For the price they're charging, would YOU take that chance?

"Better sound than my 6th Gen 80GB Classic"2010-03-29 By C. G. King (Horse Country, VA USA) I don't need so much space, but this was the cheapest option to replace my lost 80GB Classic. Turns out there are unexpected advantages. It sounds better and has a more responsive click wheel, plus when I added the Agent18 Clear Case, its slightly frosted finish gave my black iPod a brushed steel appearance when in the light, which is very attractive with the black click wheel. My previous iPod was silver and the steel appearance I'm getting with this black unit in the case is darker than that--reminds me of a DeLorean. Pretty cool looking.
But I didn't buy it for the appearance or the capacity. I can't believe I lost my other iPod Classic and then couldn't find a new replacement for a reasonable price. Some reviews for this unit worried me a little--that you shouldn't jostle the unit because of the hard drive and that you could hear the drive between songs. Well, I haven't found that to be case with mine. I've listened really carefully and do not hear any hard drive sound at all. Absolutely none. I've carried the unit with me doing yard chores and riding the tractor, which is pretty jarring and it performs as solidly as the 80GB Classic did. I find the sound better than that one too. I hear more depth to the sound and more clarity.
I won't be taking advantage of most of this unit's capabilities. Mostly I just want to listen to music while I do my farm chores, but was pleased to find out I could record with it and have purchased a compatible microphone in order to capture my grandchildren's cute sayings to share.
This 7th Generation model is the same size as the 80GB Classic and uses that size case. I guess the 6th Gen 160GB model was thicker. This 7th Gen unit seems to be a great improvement to me. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I want the best quality, easy to use player for my trips and car sound database,it works with my caska car theater. It is my second ipod classic (the last was stolen in my last trip to Cuba), i Have the shuffle for the Gym, and my wife have the new nano.
I think that one devide that do a lot of things don't provide an acceptable result of each aplication. Like my phone Blackberry 8310, that do everything in a poor way.
The only "bad" thing is that this version of ipod is that it don't have cros fade between the musics, like the new nano - it's a unbelievable feature that i miss.
If i lost this one i certant will buy another one.

This iPod will hold your entire collection of downloaded and CD files--perhaps a lifetime's worth. You can even modify its settings so that it could be used as a back-up storage drive for practically anything on your computer. But there are always caveats to consider:
There are no shortage of complaints about numerous storage drives and players quitting after a couple of years, more or less, including iPods. If you use this device on a regular basis, don't expect its lifetime to approach anything like your own, if your long-term goal is to store every personal audio file, image and video current and future. I recently ditched a 5-year-old iPod after realizing the cost of repairs had exceeded my original investment.
Even if the device holds up, don't be too quick to assume that a couple of years down the line you won't find another, far more attractive one (Apple is under heavy market and competitive pressure to make compelling if not blockbuster modifications every six months). On the other hand, sometimes the "new and improved" version is not necessarily a better value. For example, the Nano 5g, despite niceties like FM reception and video capture, strikes some of us as less stable and practical as a dedicated music player than the squarish Nano 3g.
What's hard to explain is a 27" Sylvania tube TV set, manufactured 25 years ago in Tennessee, still performing like new--while during the same time I've lost track of the number of computers, external hard drives, burners, and iPods I've been through. A 1973 Mercury Montego lasted me 13 years, and a 1990 Ford Taurus was going strong after 16 years before I simply got tired of it. The new technology is better, or so we're programmed to believe, but in the case of this iPod Classic 160, Apple is to be commended for coming out with something that, for the most part, repeats a past success.

"Battery life main issue with otherwise terrific mp3"2010-03-27 By B. Walker (Wisconsin, United States) This was a Christmas gift for my son, so these are his comments:
The case has held up great so far; no scratches, and it's been put in the same pocket with my cell phone sometimes, though I usually keep it separate. The screen looks great, the buttons are easy to use and the standard earbuds aren't uncomfortable like the iPod's were, so I haven't had to buy the expensive ones I was expecting to.
The software interface is easy to use and I haven't had a single issue with it. I've only downloaded a few hundred songs so far and a half-dozen half-hour long videos, so I have a ton of space left. I haven't used the wi-fi feature much yet, but I expect to get a lot of use out of it in the fall. I think the images look great; while it'd be cool to update to the HD version, I don't really think it's necessary to get really good viewing performance.
Sound quality is very good, much better than the iPod I was using before. If people are having issues with it, they might want to look into their headphones, because I've had friends who all have other brands of players listen to my Zune and they all say the quality of sound is better than with their players.
The big issue with this Zune is the battery life. When I first charged up, it seemed to be fine for a few weeks, then the indicator would show about a half battery, but it would die out. So I'd recharge and it did it again. I finally checked the official Zune forums and saw they recommend you "reset" your Zune battery by completely draining it (running it all the way down - which isn't as easy as it sounds, then turning it on because it still has some juice, repeat a few times until it's really dead) then recharging it fully. Well, it's still not 100%, although it's close enough that I can live with it, but even at full charge, it's nowhere near what they promise right out of the box, even not using the video function.
"with reservations"2010-03-24 By M. Rosin (Ringle, WI USA) We own a 30 Zune and have never had a problem with it. LOVE IT. So when we bought the two 120's I expected the same excellent results. No such luck. The first one was sent in for repairs just 2 months after we got them and we just got the replacement--they were prompt with repairing and sending it out. However, we sent a red one, got a black one back. ? The other is having sync issues--it keeps deleting some of the playlists when we sync and I have to sync them manually. Talked to tech support and oddly enough they say the 120's are usually great and it's the 30's they've had issues with.
I will say this. Tech support is great. There are so few products that offer one year and have online as well as phone support. Maybe once these two are up and running again we'll have no more problems. The sound is fantastic, easy to use. A little disappointed with Zune market as songs are on and off availability quite often but that may be an issue with any of these markets. So as I said, I love my 30 Zune, might love these once they're up and running again but until I've owned them long enough to know if this was a one time issue, I have reservations about the 120 Zune.
"Poor experience"2010-03-17 By Gringo (Bolivia) The Zune desktop software is innovative but very buggy. Doesn't recognize all of my music, which means not all of your music makes it to your Zune. Couldn't keep track of songs purchased on the Zune market place. Miss calculated my song credits. Customer support is the typical (these days) low paid foreigners who don't understand Americans and just read canned messages. The Zune player quit working after 2 months.
If it wasn't for Zune Pass I would be giving up on this unit, it has been a very frustrating experience exaggerated by extremely poor customer service. Please bring CS back to America. English is not English, they don't truly understand what you are saying and they apparently have little technical training but they will repeat "I certainly understand how you feel every 5 seconds", not helpful.

"USB cable doesn't work"2010-03-10 By The Cats Meow (Mohave County, AZ United States) I am extremely angry right now, hence the one-star rating. I *WAS* happy with my ZUNE until I tried to add my new Gary Allan CD to it and got an error message on my computer saying the device is malfunctioning at the USB connection port. After inspecting the cable and everything else, I've found that it isn't the cable itself, but the ZUNE that's behind the error message. For whatever reason, the device is refusing to recognise the cable and is preventing me from adding my new CD to my music collection. So now I'm stuck with a device intended to hold up to 30,000 songs (but has less than 4,000 on it), and I'm pi$$ed that I wasted nearly $300.00 on something that is no longer useful to me in-so-far as adding new music.
