"Great Hardware; What a Shame It's Ruined By Software" 2010-05-07
By Lisa M. Bailey (Richmond, VA)
I purchased this device for my husband as a gift. Below is his review:

Having owned several mp3 players over the years, the Creative Zen player holds a very special place in my heart. My first (large capacity) mp3 player was a Creative Zen and it was one of the first devices available on the market, around the turn of the century, to hold 40GB of space. Back then we didn't have splashy effects, album art, or much of anything else other than a mono-tone green screen with text on it!

I never particularly cared for the Creative software but that didn't matter much because the player would appear as a drive in Windows and you could just sync files using any software you like (or write your own script to do it).

Step forward many years; when I had the opportunity to get a modern Creative Zen X-Fi player to replace my 5th Gen iPod (the iPod still works fine, I just hate iTunes and grow tired of having to install QuickTime and all the garbage that apple puts on every machine along with iTunes). From a visual perspective, the X-Fi is astonishingly attractive! It's sleek, beautiful, easy to navigate, and it's an all around well built peice of hardware. The PC software (to move files to the device), on the other hand, is so unacceptible that it essentially ruins the player. Creative still bundles a program for syncing, however it's really just a new skin for Windows Media Player. The Creative Software/WMP routinely crashes, stops responding, and freezes up.

Because the Zen is totally closed up now, you can't even use anything else to sync music to the player. Your only option when the software locks up is to manually drag and drop files onto the player in Windows, which results in loss of album art and tag data. As bad as this is the ultimate killer is the lack of any kind of auto sync feature. The PC software will not automatically sync new music to your player! This results in you having to go one by one through all your music trying to figure out if its on your player or not!

For me, the lack of an auto-sync feature is a deal breaker. I just don't have time to dig through thousands of songs to try to manually determine which ones are on my player and which ones need to be synced. Its such a shame, since the player itself is so magnificent. If only Creative Labs had spent some of the time that they dedicated to engineering such a great player into creating a useable PC interface instead of sub-contracting that to Windows Media Player!

What a shame....

"Love my Zen X-Fi" 2010-05-06
By N. New (USA)
So.... after looking and researching for months i decided on the Zen X-Fi. I was apprehensive because of some of the reviews i read, but i bought it anyway. I must say that i love it. I am by no means a "techie" I love the sleek look of the player but the back cover could be made of a better material than plastic. It scratches very easily. The battery life if great, sound is awesome. The earbuds that come with it are superior to most. I have not figured out how to use the wireless lan function of the player to stream music from my laptop to the player or have i used it for movies or photos but that may too advanced for me. It does seem to have a glitch where the screen flashes when changing tracks and every so often the screen goes black and the player needs to be reset. I just noticed today that after a reset is read "rebuilding". I haven't seen this before and don't know what that was about. Seems fine now. I also noticed when my player is being used outdoors that i can see dust under the screen (i do not like that) I still have a few "features" to conquer and maybe my opinion will change, but for now i love my Creative Zen X-Fi w/ Wireless Lan (it just sounds cool) and it has blown my ipod right out the door (i gave it away!)

"Creative Zen, if you like buttons!" 2010-05-03
By tgg (NY, NY)
I've always had Creative products so I have a slight favoritism towards the brand already, nothing as other brands, I just happen to prefer mp3 players with buttons and a keybad - if you hate the wheel scrolling thing, then this would be a great alternative for you. The latest Zen X-Fi2 comes with both a touch screen and keypad, the only reason I chose this version was because it came with WiFi, something the XFi2 strangely decided to not include. Although now that I have this, I would've gone for Xfi2 because the WiFi is basically useless, I barely use it, you can chat and stuff on it, but really, the keypad was more set up for music scrolling than chatting, so it is a huge bother to type on it, especially if you already have a smartphone or some other wifi capabilities on your other gadgets. As for the player itself, I like it alot, it's sleek and smooth, it's fairly straightforward and easy to use, I can sort by any way I want my music to be, create playlists, store all my music, video and whatever file I want, since it's basically just a drag and drop storage device as well. As mentioned, my only gripe would be that the unmarked buttons might be a little confusing at first and a little overkill - the reason i wanted a keypad and had earlier creative's was because it was just straightforward and simple, now they've added a whole smattering of buttons, it's just gotten a little over the top. but still intuitive enough that i can play my music without having to glance at my player.

"Poor design, poor software, useless wifi - nice speaker" 2010-04-29
By US (NEW ORLEANS, LA USA)
This player is light, small and portable. It's biggest plus for me is that it has a small speaker, which is nice when I do not want to use the headphones. I mainly use it to listen to audio books and that is where the little speaker comes in handy.

The biggest problems are that the buttons are a pain to get used to that operate the features, odd that they came up with this design when compared to the designs of other players - not sure why someone thought this was a good design.
While not a good design , eventually one gets used to it but it is needlessly poor compared to it's competitors.
The poor button design also renders it's 'wifi' option useless, I wonder what genius at Creative thought that anyone would be willing to type by using the 9 buttons with multi letters for each button.

The next issue I have is that this player has trouble fast forwarding tracks, every time the fast forward is used, it crashes, then it also crashes often when it has been recharged - is there an update available from Creative ? No, there is not. This means that the 'reset button' becomes one's best friend.

I find it odd that the president of Creative who boasted a couple of years ago that their product (at the time of the ZEN MICRO PHOTO) was as good as Apples IPOD or even better, and then comes out with this device - yest it looks nice and the speaker is a rarity on other players but that is about it.

Sorry, will most likely consider another Creative MP3 player, no matter what they come out with - even if the product was better, they just do not seem to have any interest fixing it's software once it has come out.

"Creative Zen X-Fi 16 GB MP3 Player" 2010-04-23
By Lee Netzer
The Zen is difficult to use. I bought it for my wife, and she has had trouble figuring out the menu. I have a different brand MP3 player, and the menu on my player is much easier to Navigate. Also, there does not appear to be any way to advance to the next song other than going back to the menu, and no way to stop the player without turning it off.
