iPod shuffle: The First Music Player that Talks to You
The World's Smallest Music Player
To create the world's smallest music player, we moved the controls from iPod shuffle to the earphone cord. This makes iPod shuffle smaller than ever, and the controls are right where you can reach them. So when you want to play, pause, or skip to the next tune, you don't have to fumble for your iPod shuffle--just follow the cord and press a button.
The First Music Player that Talks to You
VoiceOver will surely be the next big hit on your iPod shuffle. Say you're listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. Just press a button, and VoiceOver tells you. You can even hear the names of your playlists. And when your battery needs charging, VoiceOver tells you that, too.
Easy-Access Controls
The controls are located on the right earphone cord. With command central strategically placed in this more convenient location, you can navigate your music--and activate the VoiceOver feature--without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you're doing. iPod shuffle includes these easy-access controls, but you can also use headphones with similar controls from manufacturers like Scosche, Klipsch, V-MODA, and Belkin.
Your Music Library ... to Go
iPod shuffle is now available in both 2 GB and 4 GB capacities. So you have plenty of room to store hours and hours of music--up to 1,000 songs with the 4 GB model.2 That's a load of essentials for your workout or commute. And there's room for multiple playlists and audiobooks, too.
Multiple Playlists
You've probably made multiple playlists in iTunes. One for your commute. One for the gym. One for just chilling out. Now you can sync playlists on your computer with iPod shuffle, and play the perfect mix for your activity or mood. VoiceOver tells you the name of each playlist, so it's easy to switch between them and find the one you want without looking.
Let's Talk Color
The anodized aluminum enclosure makes iPod shuffle sleek and durable. It's even more colorful in gleaming pink, blue, green, black, or silver. And making its debut: the special edition iPod shuffle in polished stainless steel (Talk about rock star treatment). Even the iPod shuffle clip rocks. It attaches securely to your shirt, jacket, workout gear, and backpack, making iPod shuffle the perfect fashion tech-cessory. And yes, there's still room for personalized engraving.
Multiple Languages
A French love song. A Spanish bolero. An Italian cantata. Your music library has songs from all over the world. That's why VoiceOver speaks 20 different languages. So it can tell you song titles and artists in the correct languages.
To Shuffle or Not to Shuffle
The shuffle switch has three positions. Flip it to the left, and you'll hear your music in a refreshingly random way. Flip it to the middle, and your songs play in order. Or flip to the right to turn iPod shuffle off.

the only thing i dislike about this product is where the buttons are located to change the song; its an inconvenience bending my arm all the way for a song change

This is the latest design of the iPod Shuffle. I had the older version until it broke (long story), so I'm comparing this to the older model. The new model has the control for volume and rewinding/fast-fowarding on the headphone portion. The only reason I can think that Apple would do this is so that if you lose your headphones or they break, you have to replace them with...Apple headphones. Further, the control for rewinding/fast-forwarding only allows you to move from song to song and does not allow you to skip a few seconds ahead or behind. That's problematic if you're listening to a long file (for me, I listen to hour-long lectures) and want to go back a few seconds; you can only go back to the very beginning of the ENTIRE file.
In sum, Apple needs to go back to the drawing table. A new version of something is supposed to be an improvement, not a leap backwards.

I do not review things on Amazon, but I feel obligated to give this thing another 1 star rating.
I am a huge Apple fan. I have an iPhone, iPod classic, and a MacBook, but this piece of garbage is beyond enraging.
How could they not have tested a product that is made to workout and run with on people who were actually WORKING OUT AND RUNNING WITH IT?!?!
My 2nd Gen Shuffle finally crapped out on me after what I considered to be a decent run of time. After all, I'm reasonable; I'm not going to expect a tiny little machine that gets tossed around and sweat on and exposed to the elements to last forever. When it finally died, I went and bought a 4th Gen Shuffle. I was excited about the larger capacity and the ability to have more control of what you were listening to, but that excitement was short-lived.
Just like a 100 other reviews have already stated, once you start to sweat on the control box it goes haywire and your iPod is rendered virtually useless. I just can't get over how they allowed this to happen. A product designed for people who want to listen to music while they workout stops working when you start working out with it. Unbelievable.
I really hope they fix this. A recall would be great news.

looks good and build quality is good. BUT!
1. can only use with special headphones with the control mechanism. I recommend ditching the really bad quality apple headphones and buying the new sony headphones that will work with the ipod shuffle.
2. It won't play any audio books including those downloaded from itunes - INSANE... i think so...
3. wont' play audio books purchased from elsewhere either
the only reason i have kept this ipod shuffle is because the others are so bad. I tried the new little Sony MP3 player - too big. Tried the Philips - terrible build quality

After reading the other reviews I consider myself lucky to have gotten 6 months of use of this product. If you buy it make sure to purchase several extra pairs of the earplugs/headset with it, the original one won't last long.
